The Proper Way to Jump Start a Car

Learning how to properly jump start a car starts with what tools you need. Apart from another vehicle, Humboldt drivers will need a set of jumper cables. You can then:

  • Park the vehicle with the good battery facing your own vehicle, ensuring each vehicle is completely turned off with parking brakes engaged.
  • Open each hood and find the batteries. In some models, you will need to take off a plastic hood to expose the battery terminals.
  • Identify the positive and negative terminals by their + and – markings, making sure each is clean and free of corrosion before you continue.
  • Connect the red clamp of one jumper cable to the positive post on your dead battery.
  • Uncoil the cable, then hook the other red clamp to the positive terminal on the charged battery.
  • Connect the black clamp of one jumper cable to the negative post on the charged battery.
  • Connect the final clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the car’s frame.
  • Once everything is securely hooked up, you can start the engine with the charged battery, then the one with the dead battery. That should jump start the car battery.

Be sure to keep the car running after getting the jump to let the battery recharge.

Car Battery Tips and Tricks

If your car won’t jump start, you’ll probably need to have the battery replaced. It may also be a sign of more serious problems, so troubleshoot by following these steps:

  • Listen for clicking when you start the car – that sound indicates the starter may not be functioning.
  • If electrical systems turn on, but the engine fails to turn over, your ignition switch, battery, starter, or the fuse could be the issue.
