Every internal combustion engine requires coolant to keep it under a certain temperature so it operates properly. Because engine coolant depletes every now and then, you’ll need to check coolant levels every once in a while to make sure the engine keeps enough coolant in the reservoir.
Discover more information on how to check coolant levels from the service experts at Allen Samuels Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram (Jackson). We’re happy to help you with your repair and maintenance needs!
Engine coolant regulates the temperature of the engine block by transferring heat from the engine block into the fluid. Whether you drive a newor used vehicle, engine coolant is a crucial fluid for your engine’s operation. Engine coolant contains an additive, typically ethylene glycol, that keeps the fluid from freezing in frigid weather. The freezing point of coolant is well below 32 degrees Fahrenheit because of the ethylene glycol. Coolant also doesn’t boil when it reaches 212 degrees Fahrenheit because of the same additive.
You don’t have to open the radiator cap on top of your radiator as you learn how to check the coolant level. The radiator itself might be too hot to see the actual coolant within the radiator itself. Instead, check the markings on the side of the coolant reservoir. This is typically close to the passenger’s side seat in the engine compartment. It’s a sturdy, plastic compartment that houses extra coolant that helps you maintain the proper fluid levels as your engine runs.
If the liquid reaches the “full” marking line, your coolant level is plentiful and you’re good to go. If the coolant doesn’t quite reach that level, remove the reservoir’s cap. Then, add the coolant or a 50/50 mix of coolant and water. Read the label on the bottle of your chosen engine coolant to see if it’s premixed. If not, you may have to add water and coolant to your reservoir at the same time. Take a look at the hoses connected to the radiator for any leaks or damage.
Important note: Always add more coolant when the engine is completely cool. Also, don’t attempt to open the coolant reservoir cap while the engine is still hot. If your car overheats and you open the cap, your RAM’s coolant might burst out of the reservoir and scald you or worse.
Coolant is thinner than engine oil but thicker than water. If your coolant appears like a type of sludge, schedule service with our team ASAP. Your car may have an internal gasket leak. Driving your vehicle is possible with a gasket leak. But a leaking gasket will drain the coolant quickly. This means you could risk an overheating engine and severe damage if you keep driving it.
Coolant depletes over time as you drive your car. It’s a good idea to check your coolant levels every three to six months. Definitely check your coolant level if you notice a temperature spike on your engine’s thermometer.
Coolant typically comes in blue, green, yellow, or red colors. If it’s brownish or even colorless, you’ll need to flush the system and replace the fluid as soon as possible. The service team at Allen Samuels Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram (Jackson) can easily take care of a radiator flush and fill, and any radiator repairs, whenever you need car maintenance near Humboldt.
