RAM 1500 Oil Type

2023 RAM 1500 Towing a Boat

Look around Humboldt the next time you drive. How many RAM pickup trucks do you see on the road? You’ll see more than a few because chances are good the owners have kept up with their RAM 1500 oil changes throughout the years using the right oil.

The RAM 1500 oil type required for the engine depends on your specific model and year as you drive on Dyersburg roads and highways. Find out more info about the recommended RAM 1500 oil type with our detailed guide from Allen Samuels Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram (Jackson).

What is The RAM 1500 Oil Type?

If you own a RAM 1500 with a gasoline engine, the manufacturer (Mopar) recommends SAE 0W-20 full synthetic oil for the 3.6L V6 gasoline engine. Use the SAE 5W-20 full synthetic oil if your truck has the 5.7L V8 HEMI gasoline engine.

For the 3.0L EcoDiesel engine, you’ll need 5W-40 synthetic blend oil as the RAM 1500 oil type. The manufacturer also recommends DEF fluid for diesel engines. Diesel engines are configured differently than gasoline engines, so the motor oil is different compared to gasoline engines.

Meanwhile, the eTorque system will also need lubrication on the front axle and rear differentials. The manufacturer recommends 5W-20 motor oil for best results for this lubrication because it will make driving to the job site or hauling a trailer easier.

No matter what oil you need, you can’t go with the wrong RAM 1500 oil type when you use genuine MaxPro oil for your pickup truck. You’ll get better results and lower overall costs of ownership.

RAM 1500 Oil Type: Synthetic vs. Conventional

You have a choice for your RAM 1500 oil. Your vehicle can take conventional (regular) oil or full synthetic oil. Our service team highly recommends full synthetic oil (or a synthetic blend for diesel) because it better suits your RAM 1500 engine.

Why synthetic oil? Full synthetic oil costs more money upfront when you pay for an oil change. However, the oil change interval is longer with full synthetic oil. Rather than every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, synthetic oil doesn’t need to be changed until every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. Your RAM 1500’s oil life monitor will tell you when it’s time for an oil change.

OEM parts, including MaxPro oil and a RAM 1500 oil filter, are best for your RAM because the manufacturer specifically formulates the oil and filter for its engines. Also, having the right RAM 1500 oil type can help you maintain your truck for longer periods of time.
